Philippe & Oksana

Philippe and Oksana met in May 2014 in Kharkov, Ukraine. It was not an easy time for Kharkov and for Ukraine in general, as Russia had begun the occupation of Ukrainian territories and Kharkov was of a great interest to Russia. But this didn’t scare Philippe.

After a short correspondence, Philippe bought a ticket from Brussels to Kharkiv and came to meet Oksana. At that time, Russia tried to destabilize the situation in the city by financing anti-Ukrainian demonstrations. One morning, I came to the hotel where Philippe stayed and informed him that the traffic in the city was blocked due to the protests. We could only reach to the café where Philippe and Oksana were supposed to meet by foot. The distance wasn’t small but it didn’t stop Philippe.

I admire Philippe’s courage. Eve though I was a local resident but I was scarry by what was happening in the city. In fact, it was a beginning of the war. Choosing the safest route possible, I accompanied Philippe to the café where Oksana was waiting for us.

Philippe was charmed by Oksana from the very first minute and their date was warm and sincere. It is very rewarding to see how real feeling feelings are born and true connection is formed when people open their hearts to love.

Philippe spent the weekend in Kharkov and returned to Belgium. He and Oksana continued communicating, exchanging messages, having video calls on Skype. When Oksana visited Philippe later in Brussels, it became obvious that they wanted to be together. After going though all the necessary administrative procedures they got married.

This story proves that even in war times love is possible and gives meaning to life.
