From War to Love: Kevin & Alina’s Story

Today I would like to tell you the story of Kevin and Alina how was their way to to each other and builsing a family.

When Alina 35 years old woman arrived to France with her two children in 2022, building a new relationship was the last thing on her mind.

She had left behind her hometown of Sumy, a Ukrainian city located close to the Russian border and heavily affected by the war. Like many Ukrainian women forced to relocate, Alina suddenly found herself trying to rebuild everyday life from zero in a completely unfamiliar country while also protecting her children emotionally.

With support from the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, Alina was relocated to Thônes, a quiet town in the French Alps, where she received temporary housing. At first, everything felt uncertain. She did not speak French, had no close social circle, and had to adapt to a new culture very quickly. To support her family, she worked as a cleaning lady while studying the language and slowly creating stability for herself and her children.

When Alina joined our matchmaking agency, one thing became immediately clear during our conversations with her: she was not looking for casual dating or online attention. After a difficult marriage and divorce, emotional safety, reliability, and family values had become much more important to her than romance alone.

Like many women who relocate because of war, Alina initially struggled to trust new relationships. Dating apps only increased her disappointment. Most conversations remained superficial, inconsistent, or simply led nowhere. She wanted a serious partner who understood responsibility, emotional maturity, and family life.

At the same time, Kevin, a 34-year-old Frenchman and father of one son, was also trying to move forward after his own difficult divorce. Family was extremely important to him, but his previous experiences made him much more careful about relationships. He was looking for sincerity, emotional warmth, and a woman who genuinely wanted to build a stable partnership.

When Alina and Kevin were introduced in February 2024, their connection developed naturally from the beginning. What stood out most was not dramatic chemistry, but how comfortable and emotionally balanced their communication felt. They spoke openly about children, everyday life, previous relationships, future goals, and the challenges they had both experienced over the last several years.

One important thing we often explain to clients is that successful international relationships are rarely built only on attraction. In strong long-term couples, emotional compatibility, communication style, and shared values matter far more than idealized romance. In Alina and Kevin’s case, both were already at a stage in life where they valued stability, honesty, and partnership over excitement or unrealistic expectations.

Still, both understood that online communication alone was not enough. On March 16, 2024, Kevin drove to Thônes to meet Alina in person for the first time.

Before the meeting, Alina felt nervous. She worried about possible awkward silence, about her French, and about whether real life would feel different from their conversations online. But as soon as she saw Kevin’s smile, much of her anxiety disappeared.

Their first meeting felt surprisingly natural. They spent hours walking through the streets of Thônes, talking easily, laughing, and simply enjoying each other’s company. Alina later admitted that Kevin felt even kinder and more attentive in person than she expected.

A few weeks later, they traveled together to Paris. That trip became an important turning point in their relationship. Away from everyday stress and responsibilities, they finally had the opportunity to spend uninterrupted time together and discuss their future more seriously. During long evening walks through the city, they spoke honestly about their fears, children, past disappointments, and hopes for family life moving forward.

Many international couples experience uncertainty during the transition from online communication to real-life meetings. In Alina and Kevin’s case, meeting relatively early helped them build trust naturally and avoid unrealistic expectations that often develop through long-distance communication alone.

Soon after their trip to Paris, Kevin invited Alina and her children to move closer to him. What began as two cautious adults getting to know each other gradually became a blended family built on mutual care, emotional support, and trust.

For Kevin, one of the most meaningful moments was seeing how naturally Alina accepted his son, Nino, into her life. And for Alina, perhaps the biggest surprise was discovering that even after war, relocation, heartbreak, and uncertainty, life could still offer a second chance at happiness and family.

Today, they continue building their life together in France not as two people trying to escape the past, but as partners creating a stable future together.

Their story is a powerful reminder that meaningful international relationships are not built on perfect circumstances. Very often, they begin when two emotionally mature people are finally ready for honesty, partnership, and real commitment.

If you are looking for a serious international relationship based on compatibility, shared values, and long-term goals, our matchmaking agency can help guide you through that journey.
